Bonds on verge of Ruth
So Barry Bonds hit his 710th homerun the other day, putting only 4 away from tying Babe Ruth for second all time. Funny thing, when Hank Aaron got this close 30-some years ago, I was rooting for him. In Bonds case, I don't have the same enthusiasm.
I don't think it has anything to do with the record. In my eyes, records are made to be broken, and if someone breaks it fair and square, then I am all for praising the record-breaker. For instance, when Jimmy Rollins begain to smell Joe Dimaggio's hit streak, I got very excited. When Wayne Gretzky shattered the lifetime scoring record in the NHL, I nodded in complete respect and awe.
But on the footsteps of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's 1998 pursuit and conquering of Roger Maris' 61 homerums, now tarnished by a steroids scandal, I can not get excited about Mr. Bonds. As a hero, he has given me very, very little to root for.
And frankly, I hope he never surpasses Hank Aaron.
