Exxon's $8 Billion Profit

In the midst of rising gas prices and the hard choices most Americans have to endure as a result, Exxon announces that it has made an $8 billion quarterly profit, the fifth highest in public company history.

Does that strike anyone else as problematic?

I know corporate directives are to maximize profit, but how much goodwill could be gained by simply lowering prices a bit right now?

I'm not holding my breath on that however.
