United 93
On the verge of opening day for the film United 93, I wonder how many of my close freinds will go to see it. Personally, I'm not sure I will.
However, I balk at those who question whether the film should have been made at all. I don't believe that in the realm of art and popular culture, anything should be too sensitive or off limits. In fact, at this particular time in our culture, I think openness is far preferably to keeping things "appropriate", which often is a subtle form of social censorship.
We need to reexamine — at least collectively — the significance of those events back on 9/11. The gaping psychic wound that day ripped in our collective consciousness has not healed quickly enough for my tastes. This film — if the initial reviews are correct — could do a lot to help that along.
Still, that doesn't mean I personally will go to see it. I might have to wait for the privacy of DVD.
