Beware May Day
Huge marches, and possible shut downs of certain industries, may be coming on Monday, May 1, the traditional day of the worker.
"There will be 2 to 3 million people hitting the streets in Los Angeles alone. We're going to close down Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Tucson, Phoenix, Fresno," said Jorge Rodriguez, a union official who helped organize earlier rallies credited with rattling Congress as it weighs the issue.
First of all, how did Fresno get on this list?
In all seriousness, though, I look forward to an entire segment of the population using its power of demonstration to affect national policy. Perhpas it will awaken many of us from our self-induced democratic comas. No matter what side of the issue you come down on, maybe this is the wake up call we need to restart a national discourse that has slipped into apathy and cynicism.
I, for one, want a nation of fired-up citizens. It makes for a much more interesting populace. And it forces the government to work harder.
