Repubs are getting desperate
The Republicans must be getting desperate. Bush came out earlier this week in favor of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. We all know that issue helped him win the last electioin, and we also know he only hits it hard in times when he needs a boost in the polls.
At the moment, Bush is very low in public approval polls.
You would think the religious right would be aware of how they are being used. But then, they might be so blindly focused on their agenda that they don't care.
This, folks, is a dead issue. More and more states pass bans on gay marraige, but we will never see an amendment. I repeat: we will never see an amendment.
The AP reports that the Senate is having trouble getting 50 votes, let alone the 2/3 majority it needs to pass such an amendment.
The AP reports that now only a slim majority of Americans oppose gay marriage, down from well over 60% just last year.
Times are changing, and the Republicans and conservative Christians need to understand that there are a lot of Americans who believe in liberty and civil rights. Passing such an amendment for social engineering would be a misuse of the Constitution (see Prohibition and how well that worked).
