Email is the new snail mail??

"In this world of instant gratification, e-mail has become the new snail mail," says 25-year-old Rachel Quizon from Norwalk, Calif.

Instead, most younger people prefer texting and instant messaging, a new study says.

The article does not hail the death of email, but in an age of clogged inboxes full of spam and its pervasive use in the workplace, people, most of those younger, have looked for something less formal and more direct in which to communicate.

As someone who was in the instant messaging and texting camps from the beginning, I can't imagine life without either, although I vastly prefer texting over IM, simply because I text with those I most want to communicate with.  IM very often includes people on your buddy list that often want to talk about nothing:  hey what's up?  nm, u?  etc.

Texting, on the other hand, is lean, effective communication.  I don't agree with critics who say it's communication for those who don't wish to communicate.  If I really want to go in depth with someone, I will call them or see them in person.  But to arrange quick plans for the night or for a lunch date, what is better than texting?

I refuse to be a 40yo fossil who looks down on new technology.  Instead, I embrace the new if it truly works for me, and texting truly does.

But that doesn't mean I'll stop emailing or calling anyone.
