Vegas makes it a crime to feed homeless
This is one that makes me scratch my head.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously passed a law, which went into effect Thursday, making it a crime to feed the homeless at city parks. It carries a maximum penalty of $1,000 and six months in jail. The law bans giving away or selling food to anyone who could get assistance from official sources under state law, and officials said city marshals will get specialized training to enforce it.
What exactly is going on here? Has Las Vegas gotten that transparent that it wants to starve homelessness out of existence?
Based on the mayor's comments, compassion is in short supply in the desert.
The city’s mayor, Oscar Goodman, dismissed questions about how marshals will identify the homeless so that they can enforce the ordinance.
"Certain truths are self-evident," Goodman said. "You know who's homeless."
Umm, something is deeply wrong here. If we lose our compassion for one another, especially to those who have fallen on hard times or who can no longer take care of themselves, then we are truly a lost people.
Perhaps then, Las Vegas is the perfect place for such an ordinance — a city of glitz and dreams and deception, but very little true humanity.
