More British religious craziness

The BBC reports that the faculty of a religious school in Devon has pulled John Lennon's classic "Imagine" from its year end program because its lyrics are "anti-religious".

The school has close links with the nearby St Leonards Church whose rector, the Rev David Harris, is also a school governor.

He said: "The song expresses longing for a different world and for eternal happiness but it says you can have this without religion."

Because the school is religious and I assume receives no public funds, I stand by the administration's decision to make any decision they wish in this matter.

But in a larger societal sense, the precedent is dangerous because it suggests that religion cannot tolerate any views but its own.

"Imagine" is a classic because it hypothesizes a world that is hopeful, peaceful and united.  Any religion that cannot accept such a possibility has surrendured itself so deeply into its own dogma that it has lost the true spirit of the teachings of its founder.
