Talladega as political message movie??

One thing I can say about World Net Daily is that it continually entertains me with its nuttiness.  The fact that it happens to be right wing and heavily Christian is really not the point;  I take serious argument for what it is from across the political spectrum.

But World Net Daily ridicules itself with its shameless partisanship and its attempt to pass of book advertisements as real news copy.

Here's an example:  their attempt to review Talladega Nights, the new Will Farrell film —

This week, in the wake of the media storm over Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic comments during a drunk-driving arrest, one of the six major Hollywood studios will release a comedy starring self-described lefty Will Ferrell, called ''Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.'' A satire of the NASCAR racing scene, the movie is a racist and bigoted work that ridicules the Bible Belt, southern white Christian men, Christianity, Jesus Christ, the family, and American masculinity.

Don't count on Hollywood condemning and denouncing Will Ferrell and his partner, writer and director Adam McKay. And don't expect any self-righteous liberals to get on their soapbox and say they will never again work with Ferrell or McKay.

Hollywood is full of people, including many self-described liberals and socialists, who stood by silently while Dan Brown and Ron Howard mocked Christian beliefs and Roman Catholic leaders in ''The Da Vinci Code.'' They stood by silently when Martin Scorsese claimed in ''The Last Temptation of Christ'' that Jesus was a mixed-up wimp who was so weak-minded that he made crosses for the Roman pagans so they could brutally execute many thousands of people.

Their first mistake, of course, is taking a Will Ferrell movie seriously.  Ferrell is on his way to becoming the new Adam Sandler, the Jerry Lewis of this generation, and any attempt to derive political meaning out of mindless entertainment is silly and misguided.

No one takes those movies seriously.

More importantly, though, I am intrigued by how the religious right is so incredibly defensive about their portrayal in the media and particularly in Hollywood.   I suspect their protestations have less to do with combatting PC than it does with their own insecurities.

Gays have been targeted by the media for generations, and although gay characters have become quite commonplace on movie and TV screens, I still am not always happy with the way they are portrayed.

However, I don't attack Hollywood for being anti-gay or for maligning my beliefs.  Instead, I chalk off what they do to ignorance, as do my friends, and we strive through our actions and the reality of our lives to improve the perceptions of others.

Rightist Christians, on the other hand, seem to like to whine like spoiled little children.

Hmmm....
