Tivo on the offensive
Tivo is apparently on the warpath, out to fight its patent on the DVR. It already has licensing agreements with DirecTV and Comcast, and it currently is pursuing EchoStar in the courts.
EchoStar provides Dish Network with some of their DVRs.
EchoStar is fighting an uphill battle against TiVo Inc. (TIVO), which convinced a jury in April that EchoStar infringed on its patented TV-viewing technology in making set-top boxes for Dish customers.

EchoStar is fighting an uphill battle against TiVo Inc. (TIVO), which convinced a jury in April that EchoStar infringed on its patented TV-viewing technology in making set-top boxes for Dish customers.
Late Thursday, the federal district court judge who presided over the trial also sided with TiVo. He issued an injunction ordering EchoStar to stop selling the recorders and to turn off machines already in customers' homes within 30 days.
As a satisfied Tivo customer, I find these developments very interesting. I was unaware that the company held the patent to the technology that all others use. I had assumed that each technology was propietary, ala Beta and VHS.
If Tivo does get a cease and desist order imposed on EchoStar, there will be many irate Dish customers.
I, for one, can no longer imagine watching Tivo without a DVR.
