Most Prophetic Sci-Fi Movies
Popular Mechanics just posted its list of the ten most prophetic sci fi movies of all time.
The list is okay, but largely predicatibe and uninspired. 2001? One of the most overrated films of all time. Short Circuit? The most memorable thing about that film is the god awful El Debarge song that still plays on soft rock and retro stations. Gattaca? as their number 1? Personally, I found that movie largely dull and forgettable.
I think they are spot on with The Running Man, Blade Runner, The Road Warrior and Minority Report.
I also don't consider The Truman Show sci-fi.
Two notable omissioins are:
Brazil: Terry Gilliam's dystopia about beauracracy gone wild touches on ritualized murder, pervasive terrorism, and the cult of superficial beauty. Think of a trip to the DMV, Guantanamo, teen girls getting plastic surgery, and a President who thinks torture is perfectly acceptable. Sounds like Gilliam got it right.
Enemy of the State: This movie scared the daylights out of me 10 years ago. Now, it's reality. An NSA besotted with power and high tech gadgets and empowered by a government convinced terror looms around every corner, including among our ordinary citizenry. If you think their high tech surveillance gadgets are exagerrated, you really need to do some research. You also need to rethink privacy, because there is very little anymore, despite what you want to think.
There are those—Alex Jones comes to mind—that contend that Hollywood story ideas are strongly influenced by the CIA. In other words, writers and directors are fed ideas that are meant to prepare us for events that those in the intelligence community know are coming.
If this is true, we can see the role played by Enemy of the State and Minority Report. More importantly, what can we infer from Independence Day, I am Legend, and The Matrix series?
There are those, notably David Icke, who believes we are already in a type of matrix.
